Search Console and AI Search: How to Measure AI Overviews and AI Mode Without Guesswork
Since June 3, 2026, Google has been testing standalone Generative AI performance reports for Search and Discover in Search Console. This finally provides an official view of impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative Discover features – although so far only for a subset of websites. The new report is useful, but on its own it will not reveal whether AI visibility is bringing in quality leads. To find that out, it is still necessary to connect Search Console with analytics and business KPIs.
What Google Launched on June 3, 2026
Search Console is getting separate reports on generative AI visibility for both Search and Discover. Google states that in a dedicated view it will be possible to track impressions in generative Search features, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, as well as generative features in Discover.
An important reality check: this is a rollout to a subset of websites so that Google can test the reports and gather feedback. If these reports are not visible in the account on June 8 yet, it does not mean there is zero AI visibility. It only means that the standalone report may not be available for that property.
AI data or “outside Search Console” – a new, separate view
Google explains that generative AI data continues to be included in the overall performance report. The novelty is a separate view designed to help better understand visibility within AI features.
This is methodologically important. If overall Search impressions were tracked in the past, the two views cannot simply be added together after the introduction of the new report and declared as growth. The standalone report is a segmentation of existing performance data, not automatically a new, independent traffic channel.
An impression is not a lead and a quote is not revenue
AI visibility is useful, but it can easily become a vanity metric. A company can have a lot of impressions in a generative answer and still get few visits, form submissions, or sales. Conversely, a smaller number of qualified views can have high business value.
That is why it is recommended to build KPIs in layers: visibility → visit → micro-conversion → lead → lead quality → business outcome. Search Console helps with the first layers. GA4/GTM and CRM or internal sales data are needed for the others.
Practical KPI map for SEO and AI Search
- Visibility: impressions in Search, AI features and Discover; trends by topics and landing pages.
- Engagement: clicks, CTR and visits from organic sources.
- Conversions: form submissions, click on phone/email, order, reservation or another defined goal.
- Quality: share of relevant leads, valuable inquiries, and for e‑shops margin and order value.
- Content effectiveness: which articles generate assisted visits and internal transitions to service pages.
- Business outcome: not just traffic, but a result that the company can link to a marketing objective.
How to create a baseline even before receiving the report

If a standalone generative AI report is not available yet, nothing is stopping the creation of a clean baseline of classic data. Save the period before the change, top landing pages, top query groups, conversions from organic traffic, and the status of key service pages. Once the report becomes available, there will be a solid basis for comparison.
At the same time, it is possible to manually audit topics where AI Overviews appear and monitor mentions in external tools. Such tools should be used only as a supplement. Not everyone can reproduce personalization, location, or the exact behavior of Google, so a single screenshot should not be turned into a universal KPI.
Search Console + GA4/GTM: why both layers are needed
Search Console primarily answers the question of how content appears in search results. GA4 or other web analytics tools answer what the user does after arriving on the website. For a lead generation page, it is necessary to correctly track forms, click-to-call actions, and any completed funnel steps.
If measurement is not set up, the AI Search discussion quickly turns into impressions and guesswork. As part of SEO, an analytical framework can be prepared and, according to the current price list, GA4/GTM can be set up or adjusted separately. The goal is to be able to look at data, not feelings, when Google changes something again.
How to evaluate change without false precision
With a new report, avoid comparing the first week to zero and reporting extreme growth. A new feature may have a limited rollout and the metrics are still being tested. Track the trend, not a one‑off number.
Likewise, do not use a single metric to evaluate all SEO. If impressions are rising, clicks are falling, but leads are growing, the picture is different than in a situation where impressions grow and the quality of queries drops. SEO marketing makes sense to evaluate through a chain of metrics that are tied to the business goal.
What changes for reporting to the client or management
The 2026 report should be less about a table of twenty keywords and more about topics, landing pages, types of visibility, and outcomes. AI Search adds a new way for content to appear even before a click. This will also change how performance is interpreted.
A good report clearly states what can be measured directly and what is only an estimate. If a generative AI report is available, it should be shown. If it is not, an estimate from an external tool should not be presented as official Google data. Such discipline increases trust and protects against marketing shortcuts.
Questions and Answers | FAQ
1. Does every website have a new Generative AI report yet?
No. On June 3, 2026, Google announced the rollout only for a subset of websites for testing purposes. Availability may therefore differ between properties.
2. Are AI Overviews and AI Mode excluded from the overall Performance report?
No. Google states that this data remains part of the overall performance report; what is new is a separate view of generative AI visibility.
3. Is Search Console enough for measuring SEO ROI?
No. Search Console is excellent for search visibility and clicks, but for leads, orders, and business results, web analytics is needed and, depending on the business, also a CRM or internal data.
4. What should I do if I don't see the new report?
Create a baseline of current Search Console and conversion data, monitor key topics, and wait for broader availability. Do not interpret the absence of a report as the absence of AI visibility.
5. How long does it take for SEO to start delivering results?
SEO is a long-term channel. You can see the first shifts relatively soon, but more stable growth comes gradually.
6. Does SEO make sense for small local businesses too?
Yes. Especially when customers search for services on Google and make decisions based on local visibility and trust.
7. What happens after submitting a non-binding order?
After sending the non-binding order, all necessary information and instructions will be sent by e-mail. Depending on the nature of the request, a phone call may also be made to go through everything together. Once all the necessary details are received, all documents will be prepared and sent by e-mail along with instructions.
Non-binding order
Fill in all the required details and a response will be sent as soon as possible.
